Visits to Mexico

View this Collection

Included in this collection are both watercolors and acrylic paintings painted after being inspired by visits to Mexico (primarily San Miguel de Allende, in the state of Guanajauto. San Miguel (SMA) is in a high desert mountain area north of Mexico City. I would fly into Leon, MX and take a shuttle to SMA where they would drop me off at my sister's door step. I visited during El Dia de Los Muertos and La Virgen de Guadalupe holidays, plus other wonderful colonial days.

Landscapes/Trees

Trees, trees, trees...I am enamoured with trees. I have been sketching, painting, admiring and hugging trees for many years.

Extrusions

View this Collection

It is always fun and adventurous when I paint an extrusion. They are made with a matte medium as a drawing tool in a squirt bottle. As I extrude the design, I can change it, narrow it, or add to the drawing. It needs to dry overnight and then I bring out the paints. First, I gesso over the design and after each layer dries, I may add irridescent, interference and regular acrylic paints. My extrusions are definitely abstract in nature but not always.

Abstracts

Many of my abstracts are sometimes commissioned work. Since I have a tendency to be more literal and so I continually practice and hone my abstract techniques.

Angel Trumpet

Angel Trumpet blossoms bend the branches of the Angel Trumpet trees in my yard and throughout my neighborhood. Their aroma is intoxicating and to view them is amazing. I am just starting on this series with enthusiasm and vigor.

Figurative

View this Collection

In revisiting drawing and painting figures, I find myself expanding, experimenting and developing my figurative style anew. Every week, I join a group of artists at a Houston area art center where we have hired a model who comes in and poses for us. We start with short poses to help us "warm-up" and then go into longer poses. The entire Wednesday session last 3 hours where I have developed new ideas, new direction and a giant step toward different figure paintings. Most of these paintings are done on a good quality watercolor paper with multi-media materials: both watercolor and acrylic paints, charcoal which I use for  the initial drawings and accents, oil pastels, and collage papers which I have painted and created myself. Ask me if I'm having fun exploring and creating these new paintings and the answer is "Oh, yes!"
